Columbiana Review

Columbiana is your typical guy movie with the twist being that the main character is a female instead of a male.  I didn’t go into this movie expecting and neither did I leave the movie feeling anything.  The producer of this movie is Luc Besson who directed movies like Kiss of the Dragon, The Transporter series, and From Paris with Love.  If you enjoyed those movies, then you’ll enjoy this movie.  If you didn’t care too much for those movies, then you’ll pretty much feel the same for this movie.  It wasn’t great but it wasn’t that bad.

The Story.
The story was a typical out-for-vengence type of movie.  The story is set in Columbia.  The main character Cataleya played by Zoe Saldana who as a young child witnesses her parents murdered by a gang of a crime lord who her dad was about to betray and flee to the US.  She escapes the gang, makes it to the US, meets her Uncle and Grandma, and is determined to get her revenge.  In the end, she get’s her revenge.  Overall, the story wasn’t bad, but there was no special dimension to telling of this story.

The Characters.
The only thing that keeps you interested throughout the movie is Zoe Saldana.  She is hot, and she plays hot girl that kicks ass very well, and she can act.  She plays character well as a stone-face killer with emotional issues who keeps those emotions walled only to eventually breakdown and feel human.  There are only a few actresses that can pull off this type of role and Zoe Saldana is one of them.
The other interesting character, which was rather amusing is the love interest played by Michael Vartan from TV shows like Alias and Hawthorne.  His role wasn’t comedic, but you find it interesting that she basically is the “booty call” for Zoe Saldana whenever she wanted to have sex, but that’s not the amusing part.  The amusing part is that he doesn’t want just sex from her, but instead, he wants to be loved by her.  He played the role with dignity to all gentleman who do want that emotional connection with a beautiful woman, but it’s humorous that it’s a guy with these needs instead of the girl.

The Special Effects/Scenery.
The special effects were ordinary.  The fight scenes were ordinary.  The locations were ordinary.  Now ordinary doesn’t mean that they weren’t good, but there was nothing out of the blue that we haven’t seen before.  It is in these elements that make an average movie into a great movie.  This is the reason why I didn’t leave this movie feeling anything.  I didn’t see anything that wasn’t done before.

The Rating.
I rate this movie DVD.  If you’re looking for to watch an action movie in the theater, then this will suffice.  But, if you’re being a little more frugal with your money, then wait for this to come out on DVD.  You’ll get the same effect as if you watched it in the theaters.
